I traveled to Mongolia recently where the ancient tradition of hunting with Golden Eagles is still alive.

The eagle is trained to hunt and often considered a family member. Once a year hunters gather to celebrate this traditional skill and compete and challenge each other to show off the abilities of both birds and trainers. This year we were fortunate to see 13-year-old Ashol-Pan, who may be the only female falconer in Mongolia, making her a trendsetter in a traditionally male job. She was exciting to watch!

Approximately 30% of the populations are nomadic. They live very difficult lives without running water, electricity and other basic comforts. They live in gers which are felt-lined and transportable.

The country came under Soviet influence in 1924 but after the breakdown of the communist regimes in late 1989, Mongolia is now a democratic society. I am happy I traveled to the Eagle festival since I love spending time in different cultures.
